1. Sledding – Fat Bike trails at Wanoga Sno Park

Wanoga Sno Park is an ideal place to bring the kids for some family fun in the snow. Bring up your sleds and inner-tubes and glide down the hills together. Bring your bike for some fun groomed trails. This is one snow park your Puppy can snowshoe or xcski around with you. See the trail system map located at Wanoga sno park for details. It easy to stay warm and cozy between the firepit and hot cocoa stand. Be sure to wait for the base to accumulate to a few feet to avoid extra obstacles that haven’t yet been buried. Check out the NOAA conditions to see how it is looking now. A Sno Park Permit is required to use the area – pick yours up downtown at Visit Bend before heading out.

2. Alpine Skiing or Snowboarding at Mount Bachelor

Mount Bachelor is regularly praised as having some of the best alpine skiing and snowboarding in the country, so you will be doing yourself a disservice if you don’t check it out while you are here. There are many options for lift tickets depending on your needs – check out Mt Bachelor’s pricing for more information. Keep in mind that if you are teaching your kids to ski (or learning yourself), you can park in the Sunrise parking lot and use the Carousel bunny hill without purchasing a lift ticket!

3. Snowshoe Tour

Wanderlust Tours is one of Bend’s leading tour operators. 1. See the Animals

Before the crisp air begins and we start to see the colorful foliage of fall now is the ultimate time to take advantage of Bend’s countless world-class mountain biking trails. Maybe you’ve read about Bend’s 277 miles of trails or seen Bend heralded as America’s best mountain biking town in Mountain Bike Action magazine, but until you’ve actually geared up and hit the trails yourself, you won’t fully understand why cycling is as much a part of the local culture as microbrews and quality outerwear. Bend offers many options for any level of cycler, from beginner to advanced, from solo riders to entire families. You can hit the trails by yourself or check out Central Oregon Wheelers Recreational Road Bike Club or Cog Wild to explore your options for group rides. Mountain biking is the absolute best way to get some exercise, explore the unparalleled natural beauty of Central Oregon, and figure out just why Bend has been nicknamed Biketown USA.

1.) Phil’s Trail Complex – A local favorite, Phil’s Trail Complex provides all the best that Bend mountain biking has to offer. Back before Bend was such an up-and-coming destination, Phil and his friends actually carved these 100+ miles of singletrack trails themselves. Located just three miles from downtown Bend, Phil’s Trail Complex lets you choose between dozens of intersecting trails all cutting through the scenic Deschutes National Forest. Take your pick from a variety of trails with fun names like the Grand Slam, Ticket to Ride, Rockstacker, and Voodoo.

2. ) Wanoga Trail Complex – The Wanoga Trail Complex is one of the newest additions to Bend’s incredible wealth of mountain biking options. Though some parts of the complex are still under construction, there are still plenty of excellent routes to choose from. If you want to experience some thrilling downhill mountain biking, check out the 7.2-mile Tiddlywinks Trail , which offers all the banked turns, log rides, and rock jumps any mountain biking enthusiast could dream of. If that sounds a bit intimidating, fear not. Several sections of the trail give riders the option to ride around the more advanced, technical parts without having to get off their bike.

3.) Newberry Crater/Paulina Peak

Not many people know that there is a volcano the size of Rhode Island right outside of Bend, but you can actually bike there along the Bend to Newberry Crater Trail. Once you arrive, circle the rim of the caldera along the Crater Rim Trail for amazing glimpses of the crater below. The area is overflowing with a wealth of natural wonders, from caves and ancient lava flows to waterfalls and hot springs. After exploring Newberry Crater, make your way to the top of Paulina Peak for unbeatable views of the crater and surrounding Cascade Volcanoes.

4.) Tumalo Falls

Tumalo Falls usually shuts down for the winter, so visit now or you might have to wait until spring. A 97-foot waterfall tumbling out over a rugged, tree-spotted cliff into a glacier-fed creek, Tumalo Falls is the perfect end to your mountain biking adventure. This fun uphill route Northfork takes you through thick stretches of pine trees at least 7 waterfalls before you get to Happy Valley. The trail is used as a hiking trail also. Its a good idea to go early on this trail.

5.) Sisters

Sisters is an adorable, old-West style town that most motorists pass through on their way to Bend. If you bike there, starting at the Twin Bridges loop in downtown Bend, you’ll pass through lush forests, rolling high-desert terrain, and the breathtaking Cascade Mountains. The stretch of roadway leading to Sisters is actually on the US Register of Historic Places, so you’ll experience a little bit of history as well. Once you arrive in Sisters, you can take your pick from 15 different mountain biking trails of varying distances and difficulty levels. The 25-mile Peterson Ridge Trail is a great place to start. It’s a “stacked loop” route, which means you will have the chance to branch off to different trails as you see fit. If you are up for a challenge, hop on to the tough but rewarding Eagle Rock Trail for a spectacular 360-degree view of the landscape below.

6.) Swampy Lakes Area – The Swampy Lakes Area offers a number of low-difficulty trails for beginners who want to give mountain biking a try without having to commit to anything too challenging or arduous. Starting at the Swampy Lakes Sno-Park, this pleasant, mellow trail cut through scenic stretches of pine trees, occasionally offering stellar views of the thick, swampy waters of Swampy Lakes.

The Ultimate Guide to Happy Hour in Bend

Bend may be a small town but you will eat and drink well while you are here. In fact, you could spend your entire trip eating and drinking and barely scratch the surface of the amazing culinary delights Bend has to offer. We’ve already written a some great Local Restaurants , so we thought that this time we’d tell you everything you need to know about Happy Hour in Bend. Whether you want sushi, yerba mate cocktails, or cheap craft beer, you will find something delicious and budget friendly during in those wonderful golden hours known as “Happy Hour.”

Food

Many locals say the The Pine Tavern has the best happy hour in town. First opened in 1936, the Pine Tavern is also one of the oldest culinary establishments in town. This welcoming, wood paneled restaurant specializes in classic American comfort food like steaks, seafood, chicken, and pasta. Costs are usually in the $20-$30 price range, but during happy hour, many items on the menu are under $5, including a ½ pound burger for only $4.95! You’ll also find discounts on their cocktails. Come for cheap grub and a little local history. Happy Hour is all day Sunday, 12-5 pm on Saturday, and 3-6 pm the rest of the week.

5 Fusion Sushi Bar is another great chance to get normally fancy fare at a reduced price. Executive Chef Joe Kim and his team serve up inventive and delicious sushi in a sleek, ultra-modern space that is unique to Bend. During Happy Hour, you’ll find a variety of sushi rolls and appetizers for $5-7 along with discounted beers and cocktails. Happy Hour is 4-6 pm, Monday through Friday.

Drake also has a stellar Happy Hour menu where you can get discounts on favorites like portobello fries, grilled mahi mahi tacos, and roasted cauliflower. You’ll also find their Signature and Classic cocktails for reduced prices of $7 and $8. Come daily from 3-5 pm for great food and drinks in a fancy diner setting.

In the mood for pizza? If you buy a whole pizza pie at Pizza Mondo in Downtown Bend, you’ll get half-off all drinks, appetizers, and salads. Pizza Mondo is our favorite pizzeria in town, so take advantage of this amazing deal when you can.

If you are more of a wine person, head to Sip Wine Bar during their Happy Hour for $1 off everything on their menu. Wednesday is Ladies Night so head there with the girls for even better deals on their delicious wines and cheese boards.

Cocktails

We know. The real reason you go to Happy Hour is for the strong stuff. Don’t miss Dogwood Cocktail Cabin where you can drink fancy artisanal cocktails in an upscale, cabin-style setting. Their cocktails are all infused with ingredients you don’t usually find on a drink menu: beets, peppercorns, habanero peppers, butternut squash, vanilla bean, and more. This stylish bar also happens to have one of the best Happy Hours in Downtown Bend. From 5-7 pm, Tuesday through Saturday, you can get 25% off everything off the menu. And on Sundays this awesome deal goes all day long.

If you are in the Old Mill District from 3-6 pm, head to Level 2 for great views and even better Happy Hour deals. You’ll find $5-7 cocktails, $3.50 craft beers, and discounts on their Asian-fusion small plates. Sit on their deck for beautiful views of the Deschutes River.

Your Guide to the Old Mill District

The Old Mill District is a historic area situated along the Deschutes River that was further developed and re-purposed in the mid 1990’s. Nowadays, it is a center for some outstanding shopping, dining, and art galleries. From the front doors of the Pine Ridge Inn, it is less than a mile walk on the Deschutes River Trail to enjoy all that the Old Mill has to offer! Here is an overview of the Old Mill District.

History

The history of Old Mill District is significant to the character of Bend and who we are as a community today. The following paragraphs were taken from the Old Mill District’s website:

“For nearly a century, timber production was the unchallenged king in Bend, most of it taking place in the Old Mill District. Hardy men used axes, crosscut saws, horses, and ‘high-wheel’ rigs to cut down huge Ponderosa pines in the surrounding forests. The first of the big mills, operated by the Shevlin-Hixon Co., opened in March 1916.

A month later a rival company, Brooks-Scanlon, began operations at its “Mill A” complex on the other side of the river. In 1922 Brooks-Scanlon established a new, bigger mill complex upstream from Mill A. This “Mill B” site makes up the largest portion of the Old Mill District. At their peak, the Brooks-Scanlon and Shevlin-Hixon operations were two of the largest pine sawmills in the world, running around the clock and employing more than 2,000 workers each.

In 1950, facing dwindling timber supplies, Shevlin-Hixon sold its interests to Brooks-Scanlon. Brooks-Scanlon’s Mill A closed in 1983 and was in a state of near ruin before being restored in the early 1990s. The old brick powerhouse buildings and their three towering smokestacks still stand, silently testifying to the district’s colorful past.

Nowadays, you will find an REI ( Recreational Equipment Inc ) in the Mill B building. This has some significance, as it represents a “passing of the torch” from lumber to outdoor recreation as Bend’s primary industry. Other Bend born/based outdoor companies like Hydroflask , Cairn , Snoplanks , Ruffwear , and Blackstrap are testaments to not only the shift in industry, but how it has benefited our community. We love our outdoor recreation companies!

How to Get to the Old Mill District

The Deschutes River Trail runs through the heart of Bend and beyond along the Deschutes River. It is a great network of well maintained trails to hike and a great way to get a taste of our town.

Many guests of the Pine Ridge Inn walk to the Old Mill District on the Deschutes River Trail. This leg of the trail starts across river from Riverbend Park (pictured below) and is about 3 quarters of a mile long. It is a wide trail which makes plenty of room for hikers, cyclists and pups to enjoy!

To start your journey from the Pine Ridge Inn, take a left out of our front doors and notice a trail across the lawn and between the two gazebos. Take this trail down to the street (Reed Market) and look left, or downhill towards the Bill Healy bridge. To the left of the bridge is where you will see a post and the start of the trail!

The start of the trail is between these gazebos, next to the green doggy station.

If you would rather drive, take your first two rights out of our driveway to get on Century. At the roundabout, turn right (or as Siri says, take the first exit) onto Colorado. From there, turn right onto Columbia and look to your left after you cross the bridge. Parking can be tight, so be prepared to take a couple of laps.

Play

Once you arrive at the Old Mill District, there is no shortage of ways to enjoy yourself. Bring your surfboard and ride the man-made wave at the Bend Whitewater Park , or just watch from the Colorado Bridge! Once the sun sets over town, catch a flick at the Old Mill Regal theater (yes, you can order Boneyard’s RPM IPA for the full Bend experience)!

Also, keep your ear to the ground ( or just look here ) for concerts and festivals at the Les Schwab Amphitheater! The concert series starts in late spring and goes all the way into September. Dave Matthews, Steve Miller Band, Modest Mouse, and Primus are some examples of recent acts to grace Bend with their tunes! Winterfest and various beer related events have been held at the Les Schwab Amphitheater in past years.

1.) Pacific Pizza & Brew

Just under a half mile walk from Pine Ridge Inn is Pacific Pizza & Brew . Pacific has a spacious patio with a modern feel, plenty of seating and shade from the sun. 90% of their beer list originates from Oregon, with a few of taps hailing from California and Washington. This is a hip and convenient spot to get a taste for the Pacific Northwest. Choose your table, your brew and a slice of pizza and you will be fueling up in minutes.

2.) La Rosa

La Rosa is a modern Mexican kitchen, and actually one of Bend’s most awarded restaurants. They serve refreshing margaritas and first rate enchiladas or fajitas. Their Northwest Crossing location is a five minute drive from our parking lot and offers a cozy patio which can be heated after the sun sets. This is an ideal place to enjoy a romantic meal under the stars.

3.) Sunriver Brewery on Galveston

One of the coolest patios in Bend is in Sunriver Brewery’s backyard, where an outdoor meal and a pint is a suitable option for any time of year. Patio misters make the breeze more meaningful and keep you cool in the summer. During ski season, patrons stay warm by the fire pit or under the covered community table, equipped with heaters.

Sunriver’s eclectic menu moves with the seasons and is filled with high quality offerings for all kinds of foodies. Don’t be afraid to bring your furry four legged friend – they are more than welcome on the patio. In fact, I bet they deserve a Ruby Burger!

4.) Greg’s Grill

In the Old Mill District, along the Deschutes River sits the locally owned and favorited Greg’s Grill . This casual fine dining restaurant serves Northwest styled dishes in a lovely atmosphere. Casual hiking garb is welcomed with open arms, and even encouraged if you’re sitting out on the patio. 5.) Crux Fermentation Project

There is so much to reason to rally around Crux Fermentation Project . At the “crux” of Crux is a love for top notch craft beers, like the Pilz and Gimmee Mo’ IPA. These brews stand out even in a community flooding with some of the world’s best beer. Crux’s pub is smack dab in the middle of Bend with a beautiful and spacious lawn. It is that time of year again – our trails and scenic highways are open for the season, the weather is gorgeous and inviting, and the daylight lasts long enough for everyone to soak it up. As the sun sets and cools the Cascades, the music meets Central Oregon in its grand outdoors at the Les Scwhab Ampitheater . Sitting beside the Deschutes River is a stage that has hosted many of the greats, like Paul Simon, Ringo Starr, Bob Dylan, and Steely Dan as well as numerous contemporary artists like Jack Johnson, John Mellencamp, Modest Mouse, The Avett Brothers, and Phish.

The Les Schwab Amphitheater has been running a summer concert series for the past 15 years. However 2018 is a special one for this sweet summer series with 17 total concerts – the most performances they’ve had up to this point! From the mellow vibes of Ray Lamontagne to the rowdy rockin’ nature of Primus, and everything in between, there is something for all music lovers at the LSA this summer. Check out their event calendar to find your flavor! Oh and don’t forget about Free Summer Sunday Concerts , which tend to showcase some of Bend’s more local acts. Here are our most anticipated shows coming this summer with tickets still available:

1. Jethro Tull – Friday, June 8th

These guys have been honing their eclectic bluesy/folky/proggy/hard rock tunes since the late 60’s and have a massive catalogue to show for it. The band truly has taken on a life of its own throughout the years as it has cycled through 33 musicians, always fronted by the very talented Ian Anderson. The creative capacity of Jethro Tull is staggering, evidenced by hits like Locomotive Breath, Aqualung, and Bouree. Happy 50th Anniversary, Tull!

2. Michael Franti and Spearhead – Tuesday, June 19th

Michael Franti blends hip-hop with jazz, funk, reggae, folk, and rock to make infectious, danceable music that often contains powerful social messages. As a humanitarian, Franti believes in using his music as a force of change, but as a performer, Franti is committed to putting on a dynamic, entertaining, and uplifting live show.

3. The Decemberists – Thursday, July 26th

The Decemberists are heading over to the Les Schwab Amphitheater again, bringing their unique flavor of folk and indie/pop from across the Cascades in Portland. Colin Meloy has led the group from their start in the early 2000’s. His thoughtful and poetic lyrics are a defining characteristic of this band – perhaps showcasing skills that were honed while completing his Creative Writing degree at the University of Montana. We are so excited to have Meloy and company back in Bend!

4. The Pixies – Sunday, August 5th

The Pixies are an enormously influential band to rock & roll. The energy in their catalogue can shift from a relaxed surfer vibe to a chaotic, driving punk feel at the drop of a guitar pick. This masterful use of dynamics has been admired by many notable artists, including Kurt Cobain and David Bowie. As fans of good music, we are very grateful they soldiered back after a rather nasty break-up and are crafting new tunes again. You may find yourself asking “Where Is My Mind?” after this explosive performance!

5. The Head and the Heart – Wednesday, September 19th

The Head and the Heart are a humble band of friends with an enormous sound. Their indie folk style was born quite organically about 10 years ago through a series of open mic sessions in Seattle. Their synergy as a group has earned them a lot of success in record sales, live performances, and television (Chuck, How I Met Your Mother, Sons of Anarchy, not a bad résumé). Lost in My Mind is a perfect example of their awesome group dynamic and how musically sympathetic they are to each other. You won’t want to miss out on this one!

In Bend, we are known to spend bundles of time connecting with nature in our extensive and diverse outdoors. Within 30 miles of downtown, one can almost endlessly explore the beauty of the Cascade Lakes Highway, enjoy skiing down the magnificent Mt Bachelor, or experience the world class climbing at Smith Rock State Park. But after day breaks and everyone heads back to town, you’ll find the community connecting indoors with each other over a locally brewed beer and some truly outstanding home-grown tunes! In addition to the nature of our topography, music is another medium that Central Oregon uses to express itself. Each performance is individual and unique in its own way – you can’t see the same show twice. Here is a local’s guide of where to go for a unique and memorable evening soaking up the soundscape of your favorite mountain town.

Volcanic

One of our favorite venues to catch some local and live music is at the Volcanic Theatre Pub . There is a wide spectrum of genres to witness at the Volcanic – one night, you might be boppin’ about to the punk infused folky jams by local heroes Larry and His Flask , and the next night, the Volcanic crew may break out the comfy sofas while Portland’s Haley Johnsen serenades you with her velvety, va va voom voice. If you are staying at The Pine Ridge Inn, enjoy the mile walk over to the Century Center, which houses the Volcanic as well as the good vibes of GoodLife Brewing Company . Fuel up for the show with a flatbread and their signature Sweet As northwest ale before walking the 20 yards over to the Volcanic. Expect admission price to be between $5 and $12. McMenamins

Staying true to the funky McMenamins brand, Bend’s St. Francis location is a quirky campus that offers quality free concerts in Father Luke’s Room . Shows are usually scheduled Tuesday’s through Thursday’s and feature some lively local acts, like the young and funky Maxwell Friedman , or Portland’s Jerry Garcia Birthday Band , for all of you Dead-Head’s out there. Arrive early with swim trunks and a towel for a pre-show soak in the Saltwater Spa , then rinse off and grab a beer at the Fireside Bar before heading in for the music.

Pro Tip: If you’re feeling adventurous, follow the blue lights after the show to unwind with a custom cocktail in the secret bar, The Broom Closet.

The Lot

The Lot is a hip gathering place surrounded by food carts and some friendly, Bend-y neighborhoods. If you brought along your guit-fiddle and are itching to play, come down to The Lot on Wednesday night for Open Mic where you can share your voice and bare your soul to the mob on The Lot! If it isn’t Wednesday (or you aren’t feeling particularly brave), head on down the rest of the week for some mellow, easy listening to compliment the easy drinking Crux Pilsner on tap behind the bar. Pro Tip: If carts aren’t your thing, grab a bite and a pint across the street at Sunriver Brewing , who offers the best food you can get at a Bend brewery – which is no small feat considering the stiff competition in town.

M&J Tavern

This list would not be complete without M&J Tavern . M&J has truly taken local music in Bend under its wing, supporting an abundance of artists with a space to perform, and connecting them with their listeners through the love of music. Locals and agave enthusiasts choose M&J for this reason as well as their staggering 243 bottle tequila selection! With multiple bands playing on Tuesday, Friday and Saturday nights (and an open mic on Wednesdays) it seems that in a given year, you would have as much choice and variety in bands as you would tequilas. Experiencing music at this homey little tavern (complete with a laundromat) is always a unique, one of a kind time.

Pro Tip: You can find Silver Moon Brewery , The Domino Room , and Midtown Ballroom on the next block east, towards the Parkway overpass. Just follow your ears – this NE slice of Downtown Bend offers live music most nights of the week.

A number of roasters and coffee shops throughout town are applying Bend’s artisanal, environmentally conscious, and locally sourced values to making the perfect cup of joe. Sure, you’ll find Starbucks in Bend. But you’ll also find a variety of independent businesses striving to serve you the absolute best coffee they can in ways that are good for the environment and support the local economy. If you consider yourself a coffee snob, you will feel right at home in Bend. Here is our guide to the best local roasters and cafes to try while you’re here.

Thump Coffee

Thump Coffee is our favorite roaster in town. In fact, we love Thump Coffee so much that we serve it to our guests at breakfast. We also serve their delicious muffins and orange-lavender granola. Thump believes that each cup of coffee should tell a story. They strive to create sustainable, supportive relationships with farmers and producers all around the world. Buy Thump and you’ll enjoy beans from Ethiopia, Colombia, and Guatemala. They take coffee seriously but also aren’t scared to be playful or try new things. There are three locations in Bend: their flagship cafe downtown, in the 1001 Tech Building about a quarter mile from the Pine Ridge Inn, and a brand new location in Northwest Crossing. Their cafes also serve chais, teas, artisan pastries, and granola.

Palate: A Coffee Bar

Located just south of downtown Bend, Palate is another awesome cafe brewing beans from Portland-based roaster, Coava. They have a spacious outdoor patio for when it’s sunny and a warm and cozy interior, complete with a fireplace. Palate is the type of place you could spend hours in, simply reading a book, chatting with a friend, or catching up on some work. The baristas are friendly and eager to whip up the perfect drink just for you. You can also get delicious matcha lattes (hint: ask for cinnamon on top), strong cold brew, and kombucha on tap.

Strictly Organic

Strictly Organic is the only cafe in town serving beans from local farmers. They work hard to ensure that all their coffee is organic and fair trade. It is a great place to come if you want to drink a good cup of coffee without feeling guilty about it. Their food is pretty great too. Their name says it all: everything you eat or drink is strictly organic. Start off your day with a cup of coffee and one of their famous breakfast burritos or egg-and-cheese croissants. They also serve delicious soups, salads, and rice bowls for lunch or an early dinner.

Backporch Coffee Roasters

This bright and airy coffee shop on Newport Avenue is the perfect place to hang out for a few hours and savor a truly delicious cup of joe. Stop in while you are waiting for a table at Chow or on your way to a walk at Drake Park. If you really like their roasts, you can buy them in the shop or at Whole Foods, Market of Choice, and other spots around town, as well as on the Backporch Coffee Roasters website. Try their yummy lavender latte if you are feeling adventurous.

Dudley’s Bookshop Cafe

Coffee and a book: the eternal combination. At Dudley’s Bookshop Cafe downtown, you can savor a good book and a good cup of coffee at the same time. Dudley is an adorable neighborhood bookshop filled with two stories of books, including best sellers, used classics, and local interest. We love their friendly, knowledgeable staff and ever-changing book displays. After you find the perfect book, crack into it while enjoying a cup of coffee or specially-made chai in their in-shop cafe. The Lot

We recommend you start at The Lot . The Lot is an outdoor hub with a variety of food carts to feed you, complete with a covered dining area, built-in seat warmers, and full-service taps. The Lot is also one of Bend’s thriving social hubs. They host musical performances, trivia, and open mic nights. Once you are done, you can take the short walk to Drake Park or grab a local beer at Sunriver Brewing Company across the street.
For American classics like burgers, hot dogs, and milkshakes, head straight to Burgz N Dogs .
For your Mediterranean fix, grab a gyro or a wrap from Greek Street . During the warmer months, take a Summer Moonlight & Starlight Tour and paddle through the spectacular Cascade Lakes by the light of the moon. 2. Paddle Board on the Deschutes River at Sunset: Grab an early dinner in the Old Mill District and then head out onto the Deschutes for some paddle boarding at sunset. The lovely Deschutes River passes right through the Old Mill and s is one of the most popular spots to paddle board, kayak, canoe, and float. You may even see some people doing it with their dogs! This stretch of the Deschutes offers stunning views of Mt. Bachelor, made even more beautiful at sunset. It is a great way to get active, try something new, and see some classic Bend sites. You can rent paddle boards at the nearby Tumalo Creek Kayak & Canoe or bring your own.

3. Play Vintage Games at Vector Volcano: Feeling nostalgic? Vector Volcano is the place to play the classic video and arcade games of the ‘80s and ‘90s. Located in the heart of Downtown Bend, you’ll find iconic games like Donkey Kong, Asteroids, Pacman, NBA Jam, and more, as well as pinball games like Attack from Mars, Bram Stoker’s Dracula, Terminator, and Metallica. All of Vector’s games are kept in mint condition, so stepping inside is a little like stepping back in time. 4. Eat Spaghetti and Watch a Spaghetti Western: Okay, so this one is technically dinner and a movie, but its such a unique experience we couldn’t help but mention it here. The Tin Pan Theater is probably the best theater in Bend for seeing art house and independent films. Every Wednesday, they host Spaghetti Western Wednesdays , where they serve a hearty spaghetti feast while screening a classic Spaghetti Western film. Spaghetti Westerns are a unique genre that brings a unique European sensibility to the most American of genres: the Western. Come to enjoy gunslinging outlaws, cinematic desert landscapes, and iconic scores all the while chowing down on spaghetti and enjoying a nice glass of Italian wine.

You can also check out SHARC , the Sunriver Aquatics & Recreation Center, for more tubing and four-wheeling fun. You’ll find three rides of varying steepness. We also suggest you check out their Black Light Blast Nights , where runs are illuminated with black lights and glow sticks, for a one of a kind tubing experience.

5. Take a Sled Dog Ride : Have you or your kids ever dreamt of taking an epic dog-sled ride across the vast stretches of a snow covered mountain? Well, thanks to the Oregon Trail of Dreams , you can now make the dream a reality. 6. Head Underground for Spelunking at the Lava River Caves : Bend can be just as exciting below ground as it is above. There are over 400 lava tube caves in the Bend area. This unique geological feature was formed by the molten lava that erupted from Newberry Volcano. Wanderlust Tours after guided tours of the caves year round, but you can also visit the Lava River Cave for an independent, self-guided tour. Located just off Highway 97, the Lava River Cave is the longest, continuous lava tube in Oregon, running nearly 7,000 feet. Once you arrive, you will descend 55 stairs into the depths of the earth to begin your caving adventure. Spelunking is certainly a thrill, but Lava River makes sure its visitors are safe, offering reinforcements like railings and concrete steps. You can also rent lanterns and interpretive maps at the visitor center.

1. Tumalo Falls: You don’t have to hike far to see the striking 89-foot Tumalo Falls waterfall that makes this hike one of the most popular in Bend. The Falls are just a short walk from the parking lot. However, we strongly encourage you to voyage further along the trail, where you will see several different waterfalls while passing through shady groves of white fir, spruce, and mountain hemlock. Come during the late spring or summer and you will likely be joined by beautiful orange, purple, and blue butterflies along the way.

2. Metolius River: This easy, 5-mile walk along the sparkling Metolius River features verdant greenery, hidden springs, colorful wild flowers, and a fish hatchery. The Metolius is considered one of the most pristine and magical rivers in Oregon and you will find yourself amazed by both the speed of its rushing waters and its beautiful deep green-blue color.

3. Oregon Badlands Wilderness: For one of the more unique and less-trafficked hiking experiences in Central Oregon, head to the Oregon Badlands. Here, you will encounter striking rock formations, ancient juniper groves, and cracked volcanic ridges. At the end of the hike, you will also enjoy an unbeatable 360-degree view of Central Oregon. Some might consider the landscape a little bleak. However, others enjoy the peace and solitude of these rugged desert expanses. But be warned: there are no bathrooms at the trailhead, so prepare yourself accordingly. If you ride horses, this is also a popular trail for horseback riding.

4. Paulina Peak: This short 4-mile climb offers one of the most incredible views in all of Central Oregon, and maybe even in the entire state. Paulina Peak is the tallest volcano in Oregon. From the top, you can see two bright blue lakes, dramatic obsidian flows, and several different mountains, including the Three Sisters, Diamond Mountain, Broken Top, Mount Bachelor, Mount Jefferson, Mount Adams, and in the distance, the Ochoco Mountains, Christmas Valley, and Fort Rock. That’s roughly a quarter of the entire state! You can also try the Paulina Lake Loop for a beautiful and easy hike to hot springs situated directly on the shore of the stunning crystal-blue lake.

5. Misery Ridge Trail at Smith Rock: Don’t feel intimidated by this hike’s daunting name. The Misery Ridge Trail is one of the most amazing hikes in Central Oregon. Smith Rock was formed from two different volcanic eruptions and consists of striking basalt and tuff formations. Considered one of the 7 Wonders of Oregon , Smith Rock is also a famous destination for rock climbers from all over the world. Some even say Smith Rock gave birth to the sport. 6. Green Lakes: This 8.4 mile hike is one of the most heavily trafficked trails in the Three Sisters mountains. Once you get started, you will quickly see why. You will pass through dramatic obsidian flows and vibrant meadows of lupine, monkey flower, and magenta paintbrush before reaching this hike’s main attraction. In the shoulder between Broken Top and South Sister, you will find three sparkling lakes surrounded by a grassy marsh. This is a great starter hike if you’d like to tackle other hikes in the Three Sisters mountains.

7. Broken Top: If you are a serious hiker, Broken Top is a must-do. At a whopping 15 miles, Broken Top will likely take you most of the day. Along the way, you will encounter bubbling Soda Creek, wildflower-laden meadows, and panoramic vistas of the Cascade Mountains. Once you reach the top, rest by a beautiful, turquoise pool tucked inside a mountain bowl still laced with snow. Trust us: It is one of the most lovely sights you will find in Central Oregon.

The Great Drake Park Duck Race

For one afternoon every September, the Deschutes River is filled with a rainbow of rubber ducks. The Great Drake Park Duck Race is a beloved end-of-summer tradition in Bend, Oregon that helps raise money for local charities. Since the inaugural race in 1989, this playful and quirky event has raised over one million dollars to help support local children and families in need. This year, the 29th annual race will occur on Sunday, September 9th, 2018. Put it on your calendar if you want to experience one of the most unique events showcasing the generosity and fun-loving spirit of the Central Oregon community.

But what exactly is the Great Drake Park Duck Race? Well, it’s pretty simple. We liken it to horse racing, only with rubber ducks instead of horses, and all the money going to a good cause. Before the big day, you purchase a $5 Duck Ticket for the race. One ticket=one duck. The more tickets you buy, the more likely you are to win. You can either buy single tickets or purchase tickets in bundles up to $100. At 1:30 in the afternoon on the day of the event, thousands of rubber ducks will be launched into the river from the Galveston Bridge in Drake Park, turning the always lovely Deschutes into a candy-colored explosion of rubber ducks all floating towards the big finish line. Whichever ducks cross the finish line first win a prize. By entering the race, you are eligible to win everything from diamond earrings or a $20,000 voucher toward the purchase of a new car, to Old Mill or Downtown “bucks” that can be spent at any shop in the Old Mill District or Downtown.

Even if you don’t win a prize, there are plenty of fun things to do at the park during the day. The event opens at 11:00 am, and includes live music, food vendors, activity booths, and bouncy houses. A free Kids version of the race also begins at noon. The Race is set at beautiful Drake Park in downtown Bend, one of Bend’s most popular public parks. This large, tree-filled park is located right on the Deschutes and only a short walk from the central downtown shopping area. It is a favorite local spot for floating, sunbathing, or taking leisurely strolls along the lovely waterfront paths. If you don’t make it to the Duck Race, you should still add Drake Park to your Bend travel itinerary.

You’ve heard it from us once and you’ll hear it from us many times again: Bend is a city that loves its craft beer. For three days every August, Bend even puts on its own festival dedicated entirely to beer. The 2018 Bend Brewfest takes place this August 16th through 18th at the Les Schwab Amphitheater, located just a few minutes from the Pine Ridge Inn. The Brewfest is the best time to sample creations from Bend’s big players like 10 Barrel, Deschutes, and Crux as well as to explore up-and-coming breweries from across the state. Over 50 of Oregon’s best breweries will make their way to the Old Mill District to show off their latest concoctions and keep your glasses full of ales, lagers, ciders, sours, and more.

Navigating the vast terminology of the beer-world can be confusing and intimidating, so we have made a helpful glossary of some of the things you should know before heading to Brewfest. Of course, you don’t have to be a beer-expert to enjoy the Brewfest, but we promise it’ll be helpful to have a few of these facts in your back pocket. The Basics

Ales

Ale is the oldest brewing method known to man, dating back over 5,000 years. Ales use a warm fermentation brewing method to create a taste that is sweet, full-bodied, and often fruity. There are many different types of ales, including:

Lagers

Lagers were invented by accident, when researchers found a specific strain of yeast (Saccharomyces eubayanus, if you are interested) that was perfect for brewing beer. Lagers are fermented and stored at cool temperatures. Their crisp, clean flavors make them the most popular type of beer in America. If you have drank Miller, Budweiser, or Coors, you’ve had a lager. Brewfest is a great place to branch out and experiment with some of the traditional European varieties.

These are just a few of the terms you need to know if you want to arrive at Brewfest informed and prepared. The 8-mile Fall River is open exclusively to fly fishers. Fall River flows down from Sunriver, meeting up with the Upper Deschutes near the LaPine State Recreation Area. The river is filled with Brown, Rainbow, and Brook Trout, but you can find much bigger trout in the less heavily fished crooks of the river.
