A Local's Guide to Bend's Food Carts
By: Todd Wisniewski
Food carts are all the rage in Bend. Quick, affordable, and of course, delicious, food carts are a staple of any Bend local’s diet. During your stay, you could eat every meal at a food cart and still feel completely satisfied. With so many awesome and unique food carts sprinkled across town, it can be hard to decide which ones to hit up while you are here. That’s why we have assembled this handy guide to exploring Bend’s thriving food cart scene.
We recommend you start at The Lot. The Lot is an outdoor hub with a variety of food carts to feed you, complete with a covered dining area, built-in seat warmers, and full-service taps. The Lot is also one of Bend’s thriving social hubs. They host musical performances, trivia, and open mic nights. Once you are done, you can take the short walk to Drake Park or grab a local beer at Sunriver Brewing Company across the street.
For American classics like burgers, hot dogs, and milkshakes, head straight to Burgz N Dogs.
For your Mediterranean fix, grab a gyro or a wrap from Greek Street. For fancy takes on French Fries, try A La Carte, where you can get Carne Asada Fries, Sweet Potato Curry Fries, or Gorgonzola Bacon Fries. And to make you feel a little less guilty about all those fried potatoes, you can also order one of their delicious (and nutritious) salads.
Bend locals tend to be healthy conscious people. It only makes sense that their food carts would be health conscious too. For a meal that is friendly to your waistline and the environment, we suggest A Broken Angel. Broken Angel checks off all the boxes: sustainable, local, organic, and vegan. Plus, their food is really good. They serve up New South American food with French influences and a Pacific Northwest twist.
Across America in Bend
Driving across the small town of Bend can be like taking a culinary roadtrip across America. From Texas BBQ to Philadelphia Cheesesteaks, Bend food carts serve up all the classics of USA dining. Located at Crux Brewing, Mauna Kea Grill specializes in flavorful Hawaiian BBQ. They serve a variety of tasty meat dishes with sides like Napa Salad or Spicy Mac ‘n’ Cheese. If you’ve got a big appetite, you have to try their Big Island Nachos!
Back on the mainland, the sandwich craftsmen at Bruneau’s South Philly Cuisine bring the taste of Philadelphia to Central Oregon. You can also savor the taste of New Mexico at Sol Verde or hit up Broken Top BBQ for authentic Texas-style sandwiches, ribs, and combo plates.
If you’d like to travel a little further than the USA, Bend food carts also specialize in a variety of tasty international cuisines. El Sancho Taco Shop serves up authentic Mexican street food at several different locations around town. It is every local’s favorite place for tacos. Load up on Chinese dumplings at Dump City Dumplings or try the unique flavors of Tibet, Nepal, and Bhutan at Himalayan Bites. You might not know how to pronounce a lot of the items on the menu--Shaapta, Sabji Bhaat, and Sha Momo--but you will love the way they taste.
Portland may be the most famous food cart city in Oregon, but Bend is definitely giving it a run for its money. No matter what you are craving, you will find something to satisfy your appetite at Bend’s food carts. From Himalayan snacks to vegan tostadas, Bend’s food cart cuisine is delicious, inventive, and budget friendly. Don’t worry if you can’t make it to them all. That’s just another reason for you to come back again!
